Letter from Rear-Adm. Sir Samuel Hood to General Jacob de Budé reporting information regarding some of the French fleet, his decision to split his squadron into three smaller groups in the hope of apprehending the conjoined French and Dutch ships and their convoy at one of three locations, and the sending of French prisoners to Port Royal.

off the Isle of Vache with his six ships of the Line — Commodore Affleck with a similar force, through the Mogane passage and to return off the East end of St. Domingo, in case the dutch should be able to fetch the Mona Channel and then push to the Northward for Europe, without stopping at St. Domingo, and I shall take my stand with the remaining seven ships, off Cape Nicola, so that I am in hopes, one or the other of the squadrons will be lucky enough to fall in with the french crippled ships, and the valuable convoy. Sir George Rodney having left a great number of Prisoners, in every ship of the squadron he was pleased to put under my command, when he parted for Jamaica, I have detached the Yarmouth & Montagu with the greatest part of them to Port Royal, in order that our water may hold out about three weeks longer; and by those ships I sent Sir George a copy of my order, to Mr Drake & the Commodore, that he might make any alteration in, or addition to, the arrangement I have made for annoying the Enemy to the best of my judgement, not having served in these seas before [[catchword]] Since [[/catchword]]
